The Draft comprehensive maritime policy for South Africa 2017 "is an articulation of what constitutes the maritime transport sector; the benefits it holds for the country and most importantly the creation of an environment that facilitates the growth, development, transformation and effective governance and management in such a way that the national interest of the Republic and its peoples and that of customers are protected and that the industry is positioned and equipped to perform optimally and efficiently in meeting its own needs; the needs of the national economy and provision of efficient service to the national and global shipping customers.

The policy provides detailed information on the opportunities that we have and as well as an appropriate institutional framework for the governance and management of the sector. It is specifically focused on maritime transport system. This policy is not the beand-all of the solutions to a myriad of maritime industry challenges of today but should be understood as being an important chapter of the broader maritime domain policy that is in the making."
