Report of the SAHRC national investigative hearing into safety and security challenges in farming communities, 15 & 16 September 2014 and 6 October 2014
The South African Human Rights Commission established a national investigative hearing into safety and security challenges in farming communities after receiving multiple complaints of human rights abuses. Public hearing were held in September and October 2014. The Commission has now released the report, Report of the SAHRC national investigative hearing into safety and security challenges in farming communities, 15 & 16 September 2014 and 6 October 2014.
Respondents included members of government departments, farming interest groups and unions. The main issues raised were the unacceptable levels of violence in farming communities, the inadequate response of the police and a lack of confidence in the legal system to address the problem.
