There is a growing understanding that addressing constraints to women's economic empowerment is fundamental to lasting, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, poverty reduction and the advancement of gender equality. The concept of 'economic empowerment' can be defined in many ways.

In plain terms, economic empowerment combines the concepts of empowerment and economic advancement. The concept of women's economic empowerment refers to women's capacity to bring about economic change for themselves. A woman is economically empowered when she has both the ability to succeed and advance economically and the power to make and act on economic decisions.
