It covers article processing fees or publishing fees associated with open access journals. The Fund does not cover submission fees or page fees of subscription journals.
What content types are eligible?
The journal article must be accepted for publication in an accredited open access journal. Thus articles may not still be under review; they must be accepted.
What constitutes an accredited open-access journal?
Any journal, which appears on the lists of the Department of Higher Education and Training approved journals.
Who is eligible to apply to the open access journal publications fund?
UCT authors (academic, research and PASS staff, as well as post-doc researchers) who are the corresponding authors of articles accepted for publication in an accredited open access publication.
What considerations are given to external funding?
The OAPF will not fund the processing charges for journal articles if applicants are beneficiaries of financial support for the publication of research.
How does the Fund disburse national and international collaborations?
UCT authors will be responsible for a prorated portion of the article processing charges. An invoice from the corresponding author’s institution can be submitted to the OAJPF.
Are there restrictions for repeat usage of the Fund?
As the OAJPF is limited, only one successful application will be considered in a fiscal year.
What is the Open Access Journal Publications Fund’s Size?
In any given year funding is very limited and may be adjusted at the discretion of UCT Libraries. Funding for articles that comply with the eligibility criteria will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Please note that there is limited funding available and the Libraries will not be able to support all applications.
Who administers the Open Access Journal Publications Fund?
The fund is administered by UCT Libraries, and is disbursed by the Libraries' accounts department to the faculty’s research fund. Request publishing fees by logging in and filling out the form.
What publishing fees does UCT’s Research Office administer?
The Research Office contributes to page costs of articles that are published in subscription journals; hard copy printed publications. For more information, contact the Research Office.
