Changing the Art @ UCT Libraries
The Chancellor Oppenheimer Library is the heartbeat of the University of Cape Town. And now, this learning and research space is poised to transform its existing art display, with a new installation of inspiring and thought-provoking pieces. The UCT Main Library is getting a radical new look as all the art in its spaces is being taken down – to be replaced with new paintings, photographs and sculptures.
On 17 September, UCT students and staff gathered for a workshop hosted by the UCT Works of Art Collection (WOAC)1 and the Libraries Transformation Committee (LTC)2 to discuss the proposed new art installation. Participants expressed many diverse views, leading to fruitful and fascinating discussions around the impact art can have, how it the use of art to highlights contemporary debates and concerns, and how it can the use of art to inspire and enrich.
In the wake of the workshop, further engagement was invited in the form of feedback collages in the main library which invited the user community to answer questions like 'What artists should the library consider for installation?' and 'What does art mean to you?'
The existing artwork collection was removed as scheduled from Wednesday, 25 September, with the installation of the new pieces commencing on 11 October 2024. Keep your eyes peeled and be sure to share your thoughts! To engage with the Changing Art @ UCT Libraries project, please mail Nadja Daehnke, UCT Libraries Curator and Art Collection Manager, and follow WOAC on Instagram.
1WOAC
The UCT Works of Art Collection celebrates the cultural diversity of the University of Cape Town and of people in the city, province and region by promoting a vibrant and dynamic visual arts presence on campus. WOAC hopes that this Collection is seen as a starting point for discussion of wider social and cultural issues within the university and beyond.
