Hamba kahle, Johnny Clegg
After a long sickness, South African music icon Johnny Clegg passed away on 16 July 2019. Clegg is remembered by his family, community and country as a gamechanger in the South African music world, having performed with two popular multi-racial bands, Juluka and Savuka, during apartheid. Both combined Zulu, Celtic and rock music, with much international acclaim.
Through his music, Clegg aimed at promoting racial unity. Many of his songs became anthems for South African democratic transition, including the timeless classics, Scatterlings of Africa, Impi, Great Heart and Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, among others.
Clegg continued to perform live and released popular solo albums until 2017.
News of his death has been reported worldwide, including an obituary in the New York Times.
